Specification, Documentation and Supply
Who this is for
Facilities that buy curtains rather than projects: a materials manager replacing a floor's worth of panels, a clinic manager ordering for a new operatory, an EVS director restocking after an outbreak, or a project team specifying for a build-out that has not opened yet.
We supply hospitals, surgery centers, urgent care and primary care clinics, dental and orthodontic practices, veterinary hospitals, imaging suites, dialysis units, physical therapy gyms, and assisted-living and skilled-nursing communities across Northern California.
Choosing the fabric
Most specification mistakes are made here, and they are expensive because they only surface after the curtains are hanging. These are the categories, and what each is genuinely for.
| Category | Right for | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard polyester | Exam rooms, clinics, offices | Launders repeatedly, holds colour, best cost per curtain | No antimicrobial finish |
| Antimicrobial-finished | Inpatient, ED, oncology, dialysis | Inhibits microbial growth on the fabric between changes | Higher cost; not a substitute for a change schedule |
| Disposable / single-use | Isolation, outbreak response, high turnover | No linen loop and no rehang labour — changed, not laundered | Recurring cost and a waste stream |
| Blackout | Sleep studies, imaging, recovery | Blocks light between bays | Heavier; track and carriers must be rated for it |
| Acoustic | Consultation rooms, open-plan care | Reduces speech carrying between bays | Heaviest option; confirm structural support first |
Beyond the category, the specification that matters is the header and the mesh: a reinforced header with the right grommet spacing for your carriers, and a mesh top sized to the room rather than ordered as one number for the building.
The documentation California asks for
This is where an out-of-state supplier can leave you exposed, so it is worth stating precisely.
NFPA 701 is the small-scale vertical flame test curtain fabric is expected to pass, and any national supplier will tell you their fabric passes it. In California that is only half of the requirement. Fabric used in public buildings must additionally be registered with the Office of the State Fire Marshal under Title 19 of the California Code of Regulations, Division 1, Chapter 8 — and hospital cubicle curtains are explicitly named in the soft goods this covers.
The practical consequence is simple: a curtain that satisfies a specifier in another state can still be written up here. When an inspector asks, the document they want is the OSFM registration for the fabric, not a mill's flame-test certificate. Ask every supplier for it, including us.
The second document worth having on file is the wash care specification, because a fabric laundered outside its rated temperature can lose its flame resistance — which turns a compliant curtain into a non-compliant one without anybody noticing.
Sizing, and why we measure first
Curtains are not sized to the room; they are sized to the track above it. We measure the existing runs before quoting because four things drive the order and none of them can be assumed:
- Track length and shape — including curves, which need more fabric than the straight-line measurement suggests.
- Ceiling height and track drop — this sets total curtain height and, with it, fabric consumption.
- Mesh height — set by sprinkler clearance, not preference. Under NFPA 13 the mesh must reach at least 22 inches from the ceiling, and that measurement includes the gap above the curtain and the track and carriers, not just the mesh panel. One mesh height ordered for a building with three ceiling heights will fail in some rooms.
- Floor clearance — enough to clear the floor for cleaning, not so much that privacy is lost.
We also record your carrier type, because a header that does not match the carriers means a delivery that cannot be hung.
How an order runs
- Requirements. Tell us the rooms, the areas and their acuity. Photographs of what is hanging now are more useful than a description.
- Site measurement. Free, and it is where the sizes and mesh heights are set room by room.
- Specification and quote. Fabric options with their fire documentation, sizes, quantities and lead time — itemised so you can see how the figure is built.
- Delivery. Scheduled to your receiving hours, labelled by room so the right curtain reaches the right bay. Installation is available as its own service.
What a supply order costs
We quote per facility rather than publishing a price list, because two orders with the same curtain count can differ several times over. What we can do is tell you what moves the number.
What raises it: fabric grade — the gap between a standard polyester and an antimicrobial or acoustic fabric is the largest line in most quotes; ceiling height, which drives fabric consumption directly; custom sizes and curved runs; and short lead times.
What lowers it: ordering a whole floor at once rather than room by room, standard sizes where the track allows, and standard fabrics in areas where the clinical risk does not call for more.
